Canoeing and Kayaking Course Information |

Locations and meeting places Each course will have a central meeting point from which it may be necessary to travel to the days' paddling location (depending on conditions, this could be up to an hour away, although we make every effort to minimise travelling). Courses in North Wales will be based in the Llangollen/Bala or Llanberis/Menai Straits area. Courses in South Wales will be based in the Abergavenny/Brecon/Hay on Wye area. Courses in West Wales will be based in the Carmarthen/Newcastle Emlyn area or in South Pembrokeshire. Courses in Scotland will be based in the Oban area (sea kayaking); Fort William area (Open Canoe Touring) or in the Spey Valley (River Touring). Accommodation Courses designated 'self-catering camping' We provide tent; sleeping bag/mat; stove/fuel/pans; crockery/cutlery, and cover camp-site fees. You bring and cook your own food, and pay for extras e.g. showers/laundry. Courses designated 'self-catering' Accommodation is inlcuded with sleeping bags or bed linen (provided by outside operators e.g. chalet, caravan etc). A 'starter' level of fuel for heating/lighting will be pre-paid. You may need to pay for extras e.g 'top-up' to electricity meter, laundry etc. You need to provide and cook your own food. All Other Courses: non-residential arrangements. As our clients' preference for accommodation is as varied as the individuals themselves, all other courses are non-residential. Our activity areas have a wealth of accommodation providers; camp sites, B&B's, Self-catering cottages, Bunkhouses, Hostels to 4-star hotels. Visit our Accommodation page for details of providers. Local Tourist Infomation Centres are a good source of accomodation details. Non-participants. Most of our courses are based in 'public' accommodation: camp sites, self-catering chalets etc. It is often possible for non-participating family members to stay at the same location, by booking extra accommodation direct with the accommodation operator. Camping equipment may be hired for non-residential courses. Advance booking essential. Tent (2-person): £5 per day. Stove with fuel/crockery/cooking pots/crockery etc for 2 people: £3.50 per day. Other items, please ask for a quote. Camp-site fees not included. Transport. If you wish to arrive by public transport, please contact us, as we may be able to arrange a lift to/from the station. Participants should be aware of the need to take part in 'shuttle runs' when undertaking trips. Course instructors will endeavour to make 'on-course' transport arrangements as economical as possible. Cost. The quoted fee includes instruction and equipment. Some locations will require payment of car parking fees, water fees or landing /launching fees to be paid direct to operators other than Mountain & Water. Accommodation is not included unless specifically stated. Booking procedure. Bookings may be made using 'phone, fax or email with credit card details (please split your credit card details between 2 emails for security). Booking forms are also available by telephoning the office. On receipt of a completed booking form and a 25% deposit we will send joining instructions for your course. The balance of the fee is payable 14 days prior to the course date. Please note that bookings made within 21 days of the course date will require full payment with booking form. Equipment for canoeing and kayaking courses. All specialist equipment will be supplied by Mountain & Water - boats, paddles, buoyancy aids, helmets, wetsuits (where required), waterproof containers etc. You may bring your own equipment providing it is suitable. Participants will need the following: Packed lunch, hot flask, old pair trainers or wetsuit boots, warm hat and gloves, spare warm sweaters, thermal underwear if you have any, several large bin liners (very handy!), complete change of clothes including shoes, TOWEL. Extras needed during the summer: sunscreen, light long-sleeved top, sun glasses, sun hat, shorts/swimsuit. Those taking part in open canoe or placid water courses need not wear wetsuits but should bring plenty of warm clothes and a pair of waterproof trousers if possible. |
